Map Finish Guide

Map Finish Guide

Choose the right finish for your map based on how you plan to use it. This guide does not pertain to our historical map collection, which we print on heavy parchment paper, and some of our drop ship maps with only one finish option.

Paper Maps

Best for framing, décor, gifts, and light use.
Pros: Affordable, sharp print quality, easy to frame.
Notes: Not moisture-resistant; handle gently.

Laminated Maps

Best for offices, schools, and frequent handling.
Pros: Dry-erase friendly, durable, wipe-clean surface, spill-resistant.
Notes: Slightly thicker; may not fit tight glass frames.

Laminated Maps with Hanging Rails Top & Bottom

Best for clean, professional wall displays.
Pros: Ready to hang, rails keep maps flat, looks finished.
Notes: Slightly heavier.

Hanging rails provide a clean, modern way to mount your map and help keep it flat over time.

Pricing for rails is based on length.
For larger maps—especially wide, landscape formats—rails can become extremely long. Long rails require specialized packaging, larger shipping tubes, and additional handling to ensure they arrive safely.

If you notice a higher price for rails on larger sizes, this reflects the logistics of safely producing and shipping very long rails.

All rail options still include free shipping, regardless of size.

Shipping

All maps ship rolled in sturdy cardboard tubes. Hanging rails ship attached or secured inside the tube. Free U.S. shipping.
